Food & Freedom

Food & Freedom

Inspiring the global fight to revolutionize the way food is grown, distributed, and eaten. In the almost thirty years since Carlo Petrini began the Slow Food organization, he has been constantly engaged in the fight for food justice. Beginning first in his native Italy and then expanding all over the world, the movement has created a powerful force for change. The essential argument of this book is that food is an avenue towards freedom. This uplifting and humanistic message is straightforward: if people can feed themselves, they can be free. In other words, if people can regain control over access to their food-how it is produced, by whom, and how it is distributed-then that can lead to a greater empowerment in all channels of life. Whether in the Amazon jungle talking with tribal elders or on rice paddies in rural Indonesia, the author engages the reader through the excitement of his journeys and the passion of his mission. Here, Petrini reports upon some of the success stories that he has observed firsthand. From Chiapas to Puglia, Morocco to North Carolina, he has witnessed the many ways different peoples have dealt with food problems. This book allows us to learn from these case studies and lays out models for the future.

Megyn Kelly Tells Team Trump To ‘Just Shut Up’ Already About Women’s Weight

Fox News host Megyn Kelly has followed up a fiery interview with Donald Trump’s campaign manager to flay the GOP candidate’s team for continuing to defend degrading comments he’s made about women.

“Why don’t they just shut up about the women and how big they’re supposed to be?!” she asked her guests on Thursday.

Kelly seized the moment to succinctly put her case after Navy Seal veteran and Trump supporter Carl Higbie said he didn’t understand why the media was focusing on the brash businessman’s awful comments about former Miss Universe Alicia Machado.

“Well the reason is because many people find that kind of objectification objectionable,” she said. “And you shouldn’t alienate half the country ― women ― and you shouldn’t alienate 70 percent of the country who are overweight.”

“It’s a good way to lose votes,” she added.

The night before, Kelly went after Trump’s campaign manager for downplaying the Republican candidates history of making sexist comments.

“You know he has repeatedly made comments about women ― about their looks, their size, their weight, even in this campaign,” Kelly told Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway.

Watch Kelly’s latest smackdown in full in the video above.

Constructive Anger

The following excerpt about constructive anger is taken from the book of dialogue between the Dalai Lama and myself, entitled Emotional Awareness (2009). Having just reread it, I found nothing to change; I still believe it raises the right question, makes a useful suggestion and offers a practice to learn it. It is only when life itself is threatened (our own or that of others) that we might need to focus on the actor rather than the action. Fortunately, that is a rare occurrence in the lives of most of us.

“Constructive Anger” Excerpt from Emotional Awareness, pp. 124-5

Ekman: I think [there is] a crucial issue for how people are educated about the way in which they can experience anger in a constructive fashion. You cannot get rid of anger, but you can learn how to use it in a way that is good for you. And the way that is good for you is not to hurt the other person. That almost always backfires. Unless you eliminate him or her, the person will come back and hurt you.

Dalai Lama: (Translated.) There is a famous story in the Buddhist texts about a Bodhisattva (in Mahayana Buddhism, this is known as a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save suffering beings*). This story seems to suggest an interesting take on the question, How can there be a compassion-motivated anger? The story is there is a Bodhisattva who is traveling on a boat. There is also a mass murderer on the boat and the Bodhisattva finds out that this person is going to kill all the other passengers. After failing to persuade the potential murderer to desist from what he is planning to do, he kills the mass murderer. The idea is that the Bodhisattva has full compassion for this potential murderer, but at the same time total disapproval of the act that he was about to commit. He has compassion for the mass murderer but anger against the act he is about to perform.

Ekman: In the 2000 conference, a group of us met one night to plan the research project to respond to your challenge, “Is this going to be just talk, good karma, or is something going to happen?” There were about six of us sitting around, beginning to plan. One of the participants kept raising obstacles: “You should not do this,” “you are reinventing the wheel,” and “why do you think you need to do this?” Mark Greenberg showed a beautiful example of constructive anger, because this person was putting an obstacle in our way. Mark said, “We really want to proceed, and if you want to participate, then we welcome you here. But if you do not want to participate, you should not stay in this meeting. You should let us do what we want to do.” He said it with strength. I asked him afterward, “Were you angry” and he said, “Yes.” But it was a very constructive anger. There was no element of trying to harm. He did not say, “Why do you think you know more than we know?” That would be harmful, right? Mark’s anger was totally focused on the action, removing the obstacle. Focusing anger on the objectionable action, not the actor, appears also in the writings of an emotion theorist, the late Richard Lazarus, who was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, in exactly the same terms. What is needed, I think, is to give people practice in doing it. You could start with a situation in which anger was directed at the actor, and ask how you could instead direct the anger at the act. But that does not have as much life and vitality. We need exercises for developing this skill. When I anticipate that I will need to discuss an issue with my wife about which there might be some conflict, ahead of time I plan in my mind how I am going to deal with it. I actually go through a rehearsal in my mind: how I will direct my disagreement only at the act and be careful not to criticize her. I do not let her know that that is what I am doing. I have found it to be useful, and often successful, in finding a solution to our disagreement. You have to practice focusing on the act that is causing difficulty, not the actor; you cannot just think about it. This practice is based on a realization of our interdependence, but it is a practice, in my example, rehearsed in the mind.

I am a Hypochondriac

I am in a perpetual abusive relationship with hypochondria; I desperately want to get away from it, but somehow it controls my brain.

I’ve had hypochondriac tendencies (more officially known as “illness anxiety disorder“) for as long as I can remember. I’m not sure who or what to blame and the source of the disorder is irrelevant; it’s the cure I’m after.

Hypothesis theories for my hypochondria:

  • Throughout my childhood, my mother perpetually complained of a bad heart and threatened to faint, falling back on her stash of smelling salts in her purse.
  • The best birthday present I ever got was the Merck Medical Manual, which I read cover to cover like a gripping mystery novel.
  • The internet. Type in a symptom and it’ll provide evidence to substantiate any cancer diagnosis – or MS or blood clot or an aneurysm de jour.
  • The tragic stories which make you feel powerless and helpless. The healthy marathon runner who never smoked a day in his life with no family history and plagued with lung cancer.

Has your foot ever fallen asleep? How about just your pinky toe? How long will you let your pinky toe feel numb before googling it? Or will you even notice at all? I’m perpetually amazed at how we exist in a world where people could carry a pregnancy unknowingly alongside people like me who notice a pin-prick size bite or a new freckle emerge among millions. I swear to feel my egg drop each month and I promise I can feel it traveling down my fallopian tube. I’m not claiming it’s painful; I’m simply acknowledging I feel it and I am hyper aware of it. This hypersensitivity is called body vigilance. It means I feel any little thing even if it’s just my body being alive, and I take it to the extreme.

My brain engages in a civil war: the FEAR team versus the LOGIC team. Even though my LOGIC team is armed with more data than my FEAR team, the latter plays dirty by shooting out the deadly ‘what if’ arrows into the ring, completely leveling the field. For every logical comment, my brain uses to assuage the fear, the ‘what-if’s’ throw something in to make me doubt myself. What if JUST THIS TIME it is a heart attack? What if JUST THIS TIME it is a blood clot in my lungs? What if JUST THIS TIME that little lip twitch is an early indicator of Multiple Sclerosis? Or Muscular Dystrophy? (I always confused them, but am terrified of both equally.)

Keep in mind, I am a smart, educated person who understands, appreciates and is fascinated by biology (my favorite science). When my grandfather was diagnosed with throat cancer, I scoured the Internet for everything there was to know about the disease, the treatment, and the recovery. When my grandmother was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, she asked how long it had been there and they told her they had no idea; probably years. She said, “If I’ve been walking around with it for years, I’ll continue to walk around with it.” I am not that person. I would think of nothing other than that growing blood clot pushing on my brain. I would not sleep because I would be sure it would pop in my sleep or when I coughed or screamed or yelled.

For years, I thought the momentary sharp pain I got “under my breast” was a heart attack warning. I thought back to my mother grabbing her chest and yelling out in Russian, “koleet,” which translates to “it’s piercing.” She’d gasp for breath and occasionally ask for the smelling salts but the pain was always gone soon after with no real repercussion or follow up. She never went to a cardiologist but told me the story about how she had scarlet fever as a child and it has lasting effects on her heart. She had us all convinced she had a bad heart, but now I realize she just had gas. She also spewed the rhetoric how her “B” blood type, was a lower caliber blood, secondary to “A” blood type. “I have the weaker blood type,” she would tell me, “not like your father. Thank goodness you have A positive like him.” Turns out we actually both have O positive.

When I take things to the extreme, I know I’m trying to gain control because ultimately FEAR is controlling my hypochondriac symptoms. Somehow my brain believes if I discover it early enough; if I prepare well enough; if I get to the hospital fast enough, I’ll save myself. My preparedness is fruitless; I am a samurai meditating on my death.

The older I get, the worse it is. I’ve spent so many years worrying about these possible horrific diseases without getting them, I’m sure my time is coming. Why else has life been preparing me for all these diseases? I wait and wait, wasting all my time fearing when I could have been grateful for every day without pain. I could be appreciating every day that I am not aware of something secretly growing inside me. The fear can be paralyzing; it’s dangerous in the world with terrible texting drivers and drunk people at a concert who might trample me and ticking bombs in random dumpsters, but fear is just a self-induced terrorist which will imprison you with limitations.

A therapist tried to help me with my brain’s propensity to rapidly accelerate towards the worst case scenario regarding health issues but it’s a hard program to overwrite. She tried to teach me if I find a small lump on my arm, for instance, I shouldn’t instantly google “arm cancer,” and instead just be aware of it and monitor it for a few days to see if perhaps it was just a mosquito bite and will go away. Her goal was to modify my behavior to delay the panic release.

Over time, I’ve learned that I have to understand the difference between pain and sensation. Awareness does not necessarily indicate a symptom of something else, it is a reminder my heart is beating and I am breathing. I’m also not the type of hypochondriac who incessantly visits the doctor; I’m too afraid they will find something and also, I don’t trust them. Today’s doctors’ first order of business is a prescription for Klonopin to try to quiet my overactive mind.

Therapists often get hung up on analysis to decipher the root of the disorder, but I’m often frustrated because I want a solution, or at least a better coping method than writing (192,733 words to date and still not cured).

Did you hear that wheeze when I inhaled deeply? Or am I not inhaling deeply enough? Is my lung capacity giving me enough air? Can I make the wheeze happen again? Of course not! It’s like bringing the car to the mechanic and then it doesn’t make the noise. Don’t you hear that deep wheeze? Is that stage 4 lung cancer?

I feel like a floating molecule through space waiting to be struck by something. I walk through life avoiding the diseases like walking between the raindrops.

GOP Congressman’s Bill Would Subject Heroin Dealers To The Death Penalty

A Republican congressman introduced legislation this week that would punish some heroin dealers with the death penalty or life in prison ― a measure critics say would be an ineffective throwback to draconian “tough on crime” policies that defined the failed war on drugs.

Rep. Tom Reed’s (R-N.Y.) bill, the Help Ensure Lives are Protected Act, would allow federal prosecutors to seek capital punishment or life imprisonment for drug dealers linked to an overdose death caused by heroin laced with fentanyl.

Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The powerful painkiller often is mixed with heroin, fueling the opiod epidemic ravaging communities across the nation.

Many policymakers are concerned about opiod devastation, but not everyone agrees tougher enforcement is the answer. Americans have grown weary of “tough on crime” policies, and polls show most believe too many drug offenders are already incarcerated. Support for the death penalty also is declining.

“This bill is a doubling down on the very ineffective, harsh and punitive policies that characterized the early war on drugs and which have widely been proven ineffective at reducing drug use,” said Lindsay LaSalle, senior staff attorney for Drug Policy Alliance.

Reed’s office didn’t respond to a request for comment. The bill is cosponsored by Reps. Ted Yoho (R-Florida), Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.), Bill Flores (R-Texas) and Steve Chabot (R-Ohio).

The GOP bill joins proposals in a number of states that would allow heroin dealers to be charged with murder in overdose deaths.

One of the best ways to save the life of overdose victims is immediate treatment. Legislation like Reed’s that would toughen punishment would discourage drug users from calling emergency services, which could actually increase the death toll, critics say.

Faced with the threat of a death sentence, the likelihood of a person calling for help in an overdose becomes “virtually zero,” said LaSalle.

The legislation contradicts recent efforts to combat overdoses through policies centered on harm reduction. In 21 states and Washington, D.C., “good Samaritan” laws provide limited immunity for people who call for help for an overdose.

Reed has said his bill targets “the worst of the worst” dealers, not users.

But distinguishing users and sellers can be problematic. “Users are sellers, and sellers are users,” said LaSalle. “It’s very blurry.”

As The Huffington Post’s Jason Cherkis reported in his story on heroin addiction in Kentucky, heroin users will often pool resources to buy drugs together, because it’s cheaper to purchase in bulk. Some end up selling to friends to subsidize their own habits, but they’re hardly big-time drug dealers.

Research shows that increasing the severity of punishment does not reduce drug use or supply.

“The supply chain for controlled substances is not ameliorated because a single seller is incarcerated, whether for drug-induced homicide or otherwise,” reads a recent Drug Policy Alliance report on drug-related homicide laws. “Supply follows demand; not the other way around.”

Several studies have found that locking up individual drug dealers results in a “replacement effect,” in which new recruits fill the absent dealer’s void. One such study found that the main effect of imprisoning drug dealers “is merely to open the market for another seller.”

Fentanyl is intended for use by terminally ill patients seeking pain relief, and its abuse is surging. Fentanyl overdoses have hit the Midwest and East Coast especially hard in recent years. The drug also has spread to the West. Overdose deaths linked to fentanyl surged 80 percent in 2014 from the previous year, according to the CDC.

There’s irony in the fact that Reed’s legislation targets fentanyl. The drug’s popularity is partly due to a crackdown that has made other opioid painkillers and heroin scarcer. Maia Szalavitz breaks down this drug policy phenomena, known as the “iron law of prohibition,” in a recent article for Vice.

Basically, the idea is that because illegal drugs need to be kept hidden, harsher laws will tend to promote the spread of more potent and dangerous drugs, simply because smaller quantities are easier to conceal and smuggle. Alcohol prohibition, for example, favored whisky over beer. The rise of illegally produced fentanyl and its derivatives—overdoses of which increased 79 percent between 2013 and 2014 alone—seems an apt illustration of this principle.

The rise of even more potent synthetic opioids, like an elephant tranquilizer responsible for a string of overdose deaths earlier this month, shows how futile efforts like Reed’s may be.

David Menschel, a criminal defense lawyer and activist, said Reed’s proposal would only “magnify the suffering of people struggling with heroin addiction.” He added that if the bill became law, it would be struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court “in a heartbeat.”

Rob Smith, senior research fellow and director of Harvard Law’s Fair Punishment Project, said the legislation is out of synch with what most Americans want.

“While the rest of America is trying to distance itself as fast as possible from the disastrous and wasteful war on drugs, Reed wants to tie America to the mast of that sinking ship,” Smith said.

A Marathon, A Heart Attack And A Comeback.

Ericka grew up in southern Vermont. She was a year younger than me and a class behind me in school. She had a contagious grin, played field hockey and ended up at many of the same outdoor “bon fires” that I did. High school is a time of fuzzy memories, flashes of lots of people crammed into a car listening to Dire Straits, late night runs to Friendly’s for ridiculously large hot fudge sundaes, laughter and just a general sense of togetherness. Looking back I don’t think I ever had more than a 10 min conversation with Ericka which was completely normal for high school.

In November of 2009, Ericka collapsed and her heart stopped at mile 23 of the Philadelphia Marathon. Her story and road back are remarkable and have made a deep impression on me. It was while I was out visiting a friend in Denver several years ago that Ericka’s story was passed on to me. I am passing it on now in hopes that it inspires and motivates someone else.

Ericka discovered a love for running in her 20′s during a marriage that needed to end. She would strap on her headphones and head for the trails where she could clear her head. She started running further and faster and decided to sign up for her first 5K. From then on she was hooked. She trained her way up and through a 10K, Half Marathon and then Marathon. She ran the New York Marathon and several others and then qualified for the Boston Marathon. Ericka ran with her dad in several of the marathon’s. Her father was a doctor and also an avid runner.

The Philadelphia marathon was to be a big family affair and her father, older brother, mother and several other family members were taking in the train in to be on the sidelines. Ericka recounts the night before as being full of laughter, carbs and anticipation.
Her last memory of race day was of posing for a family photo in the lobby of the hotel at 6:30 in the morning. Her family was lined up near the end of the course, waiting for her to run by. They knew her average times and when ten min went by with no sight of her, they began to worry. At 30 min, Ericka’s mother was frantic.

Around mile 23, Ericka pitched forward suddenly and fell to the ground, hitting her head. Witnesses recount that she did not appear to try and brace her fall with her hands. At that exact same moment a nurse named Mary Kay Silverman was running by Ericka in the opposite direction. The marathon course is set up so that the runners essentially run in a loop. The front runners are heading back to the finish line while many other runners are still heading out to the midpoint where they will turn around. The course diverges from mile 17 to 21, away from the runners heading to the finish line. Had Ericka collapsed even two minutes earlier, Mary Kay would have been on a different path and not even within eye sight of her.

At first people thought that Ericka had fainted but Mary Kay knew it was cardiac related and immediately set to work to keep her blood circulating. She began CPR. The second amazing piece of this story is that Ericka fell only a few yards from one of the official medic tents, staffed with EMT’s, on the course. There were three total tents/stations along the route, the other two were at the beginning and midpoint of the race. The fact that the EMT’s were able to reach Ericka within three minutes of her collapse and shock her heart back into rhythm undoubtedly saved her life. She was transferred immediately to Hahnemann University Hospital. Once there, Ericka was put into an induced coma while doctors began to lower her body temperature in order to try and prevent swelling and brain damage. Four days later on Wednesday, Ericka woke up. Her first vision was of many faces peering down at her. One can only imagine the complete disorientation and confusion she felt. Ericka was told briefly that she had been in an accident. She went back to sleep for another 24 hours. These are all the facts, but facts don’t convey the whole story.

Inside those four days, Ericka’s family lived hour by hour. Her big brother moved a cot into her hospital room and slept there every night by her side. Her mother, could barely stand to see her shivering, as she knew that Ericka hated to be cold. She had to stop herself from putting blankets over Ericka and trying to warm her up. The family held a constant around the clock vigil.
After Ericka woke up, her mother recounted that her brain was moving very slowly. Ericka asked for her cell phone on Thursday and took about a half hour to type a two line text message. Someone could have typed it for her but she insisted on doing it herself.

The diagnosis was a congenital heart defect. It had been there since birth. It could have failed her at any time during those other five marathons, but she never felt dizziness, chest pressure or labored breathing. In the weeks that followed Ericka grew well enough to leave the hospital in PA and return home to MA. Her father helped to find one of the top doctors in congenital heart surgery and her corrective “open heart” procedure was scheduled for the beginning of February at Mass General Hospital.

Those five weeks of waiting were among the hardest weeks of Ericka’s life. She was essentially on modified bed rest at home. She could not go to work but worst of all, for someone who is a top athlete and long distance runner, she could not exercise. She felt fine and grew frustrated with the long days and time at home.

The day of the surgery arrived and Ericka was terrified. Thoughts raced through her mind; maybe she had been saved by mistake and now she would not survive this surgery. She was sedated and then put under anesthesia and placed on a Heart/ Lung bypass machine. Ericka’s chest was opened up and the five hour long surgery began. It went off without a hitch and her heart was responding perfectly. The recovery began again in earnest.

As she began to heal physically, Ericka began to wrestle with the reality of what her life might be like going forward. She was 38 years old and the surgery had been a success but her cardiac doctor remained cautious and steadfast in his warning to her that she should not run again. So much of her self-identity was wrapped up in being a runner. She had the surgery with the hope that it would allow her to live a normal, active life. All of her cardiac stress tests came back beautifully, heart fully functioning and pumping blood perfectly.

Ericka was at a fork in the road. She could have accepted the doctor’s medical advice that she should not run again, or she could seek a second opinion. Ericka’s dad understood what running meant to her. He consulted other doctors around New England and found a specialist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital who would re-evaluate Ericka. She had more stress tests, again they looked great. The new doctor agreed to clear Ericka for running, only no marathons. She was given instructions on how to monitor her heart rate, run with a heart monitor and was placed on a Beta Blocker. It was summer of 2011 when Ericka received this news by phone that she could run again. She took several weeks to let it sink in.

Her family was on vacation a few weeks later and during a lull in the activity, her father quietly pulled her aside and asked if she wanted to take a few spins around the track nearby. They went together and ran side by side slowly. And it was hard. It did not feel good. It felt like she was running up hill and she was hyper aware of every beat her heart was making. They ran for ten minutes that day. In the weeks and months that followed, Ericka began to build her strength and endurance back up slowly. She ran only indoors, on a treadmill and in a gym that had a defibrillator. She gradually increased her mileage. She entered a 5K and then a few more.

Ericka’s biggest triumph was the completion of the Disney Orlando half marathon in October three years ago. She ran the race with Mary Kay Silverman by her side. The two have become very close. I was able to reach MaryKay Silverman just this week as I was editing this article. I asked her how that day in 2009 had impacted her life. Mary Kay relayed that although she was an RN and the Director of Emergency Services at Hahnemann Hospital it was much more nerve racking to be doing CPR outside of a hospital, on the ground and with no one else around for backup. She said the EMT’s arrived in only a few minutes but those minutes felt much longer at the time. Once they did arrive and take over, amazingly, MaryKay got up and rejoined the marathon, officially finishing the race. She hardly remembers those last 3.2 miles but felt it was important for her to try and finish.

When MaryKay got to work the next day at the hospital she called up to the ICU and asked if a woman in her 30′s had been brought in in cardiac arrest, fearing Ericka had not survived. She remembers feeling so grateful to hear that Ericka was alive and that they were keeping her on the cooling protocol and monitoring her brain for swelling. When Ericka did wake up, she and her family were told that the nurse who had saved her life, actually worked there in the hospital and Ericka asked if she could meet her. MaryKay described this reunion as emotional for everyone. In all the years she has worked as a nurse this experience impacted her more than any other. She kept in touch with Ericka while Ericka was waiting for her heart surgery and in the months afterward kept checking in by email and phone. When Ericka was fully recovered she went to spend a weekend with MaryKay. They talked for hours and discovered that they had so much in common. In the seven years since that fateful day, Ericka and MaryKay have become fast friends.

On a personal note Ericka, has inspired me to start running. The image of Ericka and her dad running around the track the first day back and how hard it must have been mentally and physically stayed with me. When I felt like I could not get enough air in my lungs during runs or became frustrated with my slow progress, I thought of her and I kept going. 6 months later I trained for my first 5k. Today I run four times a week and I am training for a 10k.

In the years since her collapse Ericka has gone on to make the world a better place. She has established a yearly 12 days of giving tradition where she chooses a different charity for twelve days and posts links and information on her social media, raising awareness and asking people to donate if they can. She is one person but she has inspired so many.

People may read this story and wonder if Ericka is taking undue risk. I see a woman who is choosing to live life on her own terms. None of us know how long we have and most of us forget to live each day to the fullest. If you are reading this story and fighting your way back from something, I hope that it will inspire you too. Ericka believes that when your time is up, it’s up. It was just not her time.

We Wear Orange

On Friday our family wears orange. You can’t compare pain and hurt like the one our people endured in the Residential Schools. You only have to ask someone in the community about the abuse that the schools caused, and each one could name 3 or 4 elders, uncles, or grandmas that endured the horrid pain. My mother never ended up in the schools but instead spent her years in the foster care system. When she was 9, she came downstairs looking for her brother, who lived in the home with her. The response to her inquiry, was simply “Your brother’s been adopted and you will never see him again.”

How does healing begin in a community that is still looked upon with such judgment and racism? Even growing up as the “lonely Indian”, I never shared my Metis heritage. Because you don’t tell people you’re “mixed”; my mother made sure of that. We only shared our Cherokee roots. I remember though, even then, the shame behind my culture in school and the mocking names people would give me when I would share small pieces of my culture and of my community even though, for the most part, I looked like a white girl. And once I shared my Aboriginal background, their faces changed and hardened slightly, as if they weren’t surprised that I was from an alcoholic single-parent family.

So much healing has to happen. The elders that taught, and continue to teach us, never share their anger like I expected they would. Only healing. Desperate to heal their community from the abuse that has since manifested into failed relationships, addictions and suicide.

So, as the lonely Indian girl that watched her family suffer from abuse, that looked in the eyes of people whose pain was so frightening from the memories of the schools, we stand. We wear orange shirts together. We will recollect and hope for the generations to come. But we won’t forget. We honor the courage and spirits of those who endured the schools. And teach our children of the healing that will come.

Clinton Campaign Produces Further Proof Of Trump’s Damaging Treatment Of Women

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton did not let the first debate conclude without calling out her opponent’s history for making degrading comments about women

Clinton referenced former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, who has accused GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump of calling her “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping” during her time working for the Republican presidential nominee.

The Clinton campaign released a video after Monday’s debate featuring Machado, who was the first woman to win Miss Universe after Trump bought the pageant. Machado alleged she was not paid for some of the work she did as Miss Universe and that Trump’s scrutiny over her weight left her battling eating disorders.

She described one experience in particular as humiliating. Machado gained weight soon after becoming Miss Universe and said Trump ambushed her with reporters who were invited to watch her work out.

“She weighed 118 pounds or 117 pounds, and she went up to 160 or 170, so this is somebody that likes to eat,” Trump told reporters.

When The New York Times published an in-depth report this year on Trump’s problematic treatment of women, he admitted to wanting Machado to lose weight. “To that, I will plead guilty,” he told the paper.

Machado was in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen when the Times published its report. In the video above, she said she is now a citizen and will vote in November.

“This is a man that doesn’t realize the damage he causes,” Machado said in the video above. “He bears many grudges, and harbors a deep racism, and he is convinced that there are lesser human beings than him.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Bethlehem’s Enduring Bach Festival: GPS For The Soul

If you need to destress from the noise of the national debate, consider how the Bethlehem Bach Festival has helped communities come together to find calm, peace and prayer for more than 100 years.

2016-09-26-1474905909-5545014-Festival2016GregFUnfgeldCharlotteMattax.jpg

It was in 1900 that the two-year old Bach Choir of Bethlehem gave the first performance in North America of Bach’s greatest choral work, his Mass in B Minor. With only a few exceptions, the Choir has performed the Mass every year since. Their voices, nearly one hundred strong, cannot have been more fervent, nor more inspired by community spirit, than they were earlier this year at Packer Memorial Church, on the campus of Lehigh University, May 13 and 14. it was the first weekend of the 109th Bethlehem Bach Festival, and the house was packed.

Led by by Greg Funfgeld, artistic director and conductor since 1983, the Bethlehem Bach Festival’s two performances each year of its signature work, the Mass in B Minor, represent a link with the America of Andy Hardy. It was a time when classical music, and the arts in general, aspired to provide guidance and energy to communities nationwide; in the case of Bethlehem, it was according to the University’s holistic motto, “Homo Minister et Interpres Naturae,” which translates loosely to “Woman and Man, servants and interpreters of nature.”

2016-09-26-1474905863-9379570-Festival2016crowdoutsidePackerChurch.jpg The performance was one of integrity, movement, passion and weight. The effortless virtuosity and stylistic homogeneity of the combined forces in the chapel’s stone sanctity, allowed Bach’s music to sing out with infectious, exhilarating enthusiasm. Agnes Zsigovics, Rosa Lamoreaux, Daniel Taylor, Benjamin Butterfield, William Sharp and Daniel Lichti were outstanding soloists. The Choir was large, warm and flexible.

With a collaborative interpretive approach based on the latest scholarly research, kept honest by the great Bach biographer Christoph Wolff in the front row, Funfgeld focused on creating a compelling flow in which the emotional weight of each section was directed upwards, as if the music were being offered to Bach’s God. The rolling out of the massive, six-part fugue in the “Sanctus” was the most perfect single demonstration of how Funfgeld’s combined forces combined the intimate and the infinite. And beyond the music, there was a different authenticity from listening in an audience which, as I came to know, heard — as Bach intended in his humility — the prayers for consolation and peace inseparably from the music itself.

If you were not there, you can hear the same deep intensity of music making on the Festival’s recording from 1998. Bethlehem may no longer have Bethlehem Steel, but it has in the cultural fuel of its Bethlehem Bach Festival a generous helping of GPS for the soul.

2016-09-26-1474905935-9362483-Festival2016BachChoraleSing.jpg There was more to the two-day musical feast than just the B Minor Mass. On Friday afternoon, Dr. Wolff gave a stimulating lecture, and the first of two public, Bach chorale sing-alongs ensued. Friday evening, it was an exuberant, feel good concert of Bach’s gloriously optimistic Cantata No. 100, the Second Brandenburg Concerto with the brilliant trumpet soloist Terry Everson, and the procession of gorgeous delights known as the Easter Oratorio.

On Saturday morning, at the University’s Zoellner Arts Center just down the block, the Taylor 2 unit of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, with the Festival Orchestra in the pit, charmed the audience, who charmed them back with their encouragement and eager applause, in a series of joyful, inventive responses to and illuminations of music by Handel and Bach.

Then at last, after a brisk walk and a healthy lunch, the B Minor Mass of Johann Sebastian Bach, Part One, began at 2:30; Part Two began at 4:30. Then out into the night for a recreation on the Moravian College campus of the Cafe Zimmermann in Leipzig, where Bach and his fellow musicians and townspeople spent many pleasant evenings, quenching their thirsts in both music and coffee. It was thirsty work being Bach.

The Bethlehem Bach Festival’s endurance has enabled the Bach Choir of Bethlehem to give 31 concerts and educational programs year-round, reaching an audience of more than 20,000. The Choir will conclude its season December 10 and 11 with Christmas concerts in Bethlehem and Allentown, and probably snow on the ground and sleigh bells ringing in the air.

When Life Laughs At Your Best Laid Plans

This month found me exploring the country of Japan for the first time.

Those of you who know me won’t be surprised to learn that I did a whole lot of planning… or, as I lovingly called it, “Japlanning”… in the months leading up to the trip. And that Japlanning paid off.

Mostly.

There were a few moments, however, when things didn’t quite go according to the Japlan. When, it seemed, life seemed to laugh at it. Heartily.

Like when we walked a looooong way to get into the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

2016-09-26-1474909189-4146063-blogclosedgate.jpg

Or when my eagerly anticipated stewed fishcake lunch had a texture I couldn’t quite…swallow.

2016-09-26-1474909227-5109784-blogfishcake.jpg

There were plenty of other examples during our two-week adventure, and Hubbie and I tried hard to gracefully make the best of these moments.

And we did. Sometimes.

And in those moments… when we let go of our stubborn hold on our plan, the unexpected turn of events became another part of the adventure.

Which led me to a new way of looking at life…and to a new word to describe it.

Plexible.

What does it mean to be plexible? It means you plan things out… and then you commit to being flexible in the moment.

See what I did there?

Stay with me… this is a bit more complex than it might sound at first.

There will be all kinds of times when you need to be plexible…

  • … like when you book the perfect flight to your class reunion, but weather makes it impossible to take off… so you need to figure out another way to connect with old friends
  • … like when you put together the perfect presentation on your research, but your daughter gets the flu on the big day… so you need to figure out another way to share the info with your colleagues
  • … like when you’ve actually read the book for book club, but a friend scores last-minute tickets to hear your favorite ’80s rock band… so you need to figure out how to graciously bail out of your club meeting (and get those stains out of your old acid-washed jeans pronto)

The thing is… this lesson is actually not about being plexible. That’s too simple and, frankly, there’s really no choice in the matter. We can make all the plans we want, and sometimes life just won’t cooperate.

This lesson is about our attitude around being plexible… It’s about making the choice to be plexible… to do it with curiosity and, sometimes, with delight. Because it’s all part of the adventure.

And, sometimes, the thing we didn’t plan for actually beats out anything we ever could have dreamed up beforehand.

The important thing here is to find the balance in our fun new language. After all, plexible is made up of two words, and they’re both critically important.

  • We must plan, because planning helps us intentionally take actions that guide us toward a wide variety of the goals and desires and needs that matter to us.
  • We must be flexible because our plans… well, they just don’t always stick. Life laughs. Outside forces — both good and bad — get in the way.

Sure, you can avoid being plexible. You can fail to plan and let life just happen without focusing on the things that truly mean something to you at the moment.

Or… you can plan so hard, and get so attached to it, that you stubbornly refuse to give it up when things go a different way. Which doesn’t just create a terrible situation, but a terrible mood.

Sure, being plexible isn’t always fun. Sometimes planning is a drag. And, sometimes, when our plans don’t go the way we want, when life might laugh at them a bit, we can get very, very disappointed.

But.

If you decide to not just accept the need to be plexible, but to intentionally be plexible, and to do so with curiosity, you might just find that your disappointments aren’t quite as disappointing as before. Or maybe they’re not as disappointing for quite as long.

You might find that the new things you discover as a result bring you a whole new set of opportunities.

And, I promise you, you will find that all of that planning does pay off sometimes. In fact, it pays off a lot of the time.

Like when you’ve received one too many Japanese tofu breakfasts…and you find yourself grateful that, thanks to your Japlanning, you brought some oatmeal packets from home.

Dining with the Victorians

Dining with the Victorians

From traditional seaside holiday treats like candy floss, ice cream and fish ‘n’ chips, to the British fascination for cooking and baking, the Victorian era has shaped British culinary heritage. Victoria’s austere attitude after an age of Regency indulgence generated enormous cultural change. Excess and gluttony were replaced with rigid tradition and morally upright values, and Victoria’s large family became the centre of the cultural imagination, with the power to begin new traditions. If Queen Victoria’s family sat down to turkey on Christmas day, so did the rest of the nation. Food was a significant part of the Victorians’ lives, whether they had too much of it or not enough. The destitute would be fed gruel in the workhouses the archetypal words of Dickens’s Oliver are imprinted on our minds: ‘Please, sir, I want some more.’ The burgeoning street traders spilling over from the previous century devolved into a whole new culture of ‘mudlarks’, trotter boilers, food slop traders and sewer ‘toshers’, to name but a few. Wealthy Victorians feasted to excess on the newly emerging trend for breakfast, lunch and tea. Public dining became de rigeur, and, like the outdoor ‘pique-nique’, introduced both controversy and a new way of eating. Victorians also struggled against many of these trends, with the belief that the control and denial of food were akin to healthy moral values. This was the era of cooking, educating and training in food management, combined with the old world of superstition and tradition, that changed British society forever.

John Oliver Is Back, And He Wants You To Get ‘F**king Outraged’ Over Donald Trump’s Scandals

If you think this election is simply a choice between two candidates with a scandal-filled history, John Oliver has a message for you… and it comes in the form of raisins.

In his return to HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, Oliver took an in-depth look at the scandals surrounding both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and found they’re not even close to equal.

NOTE: Strong language in the clip above and description below.

“This campaign has been dominated by scandals, but it is dangerous to think that there is an equal number on both sides,” he said. “And you can be irritated by some of Hillary’s ― that is understandable ― but you should then be fucking outraged by Trump’s.”

And that brings it back to those raisins.

“Ethical failings in a politician are like raisins in a cookie,” he explained. “They shouldn’t be there. They disgust people. But most politicians have at least a few raisins.”

Here’s Hillary’s cookie:

But when it comes to Trump, there are more raisins than can fit in a cookie. A lot more:

“The man is a fucking raisin monsoon,” Oliver declared. “He is ethically compromised to an almost unprecedented degree.”

See his full takedown of Trump in the clip above.

The 11 Struggles Of Hypersensitive Individuals

Here’s the cycle.

Person A does something person B doesn’t like.

Person B gets hurt and calls them out on it.

Person A gets mad at Person B.

It happens to me over and over and over again. It’s gotten to the point where I just expect it, like the people sitting in the splash zone at Sea World.

And then as I sat down to think about it, there’s a lot of struggles that us overly sensitive people go through. It’s not just one thing–it’s a multitude of them. So, in the name of self-therapy through writing, I’m going to list every single one of them.

1. We’re Always The Bad Guy, Even Though We Shouldn’t Be

I’m going to write that again. We’re always the bad guy, even though we shouldn’t be. When somebody hurts us, we tell them about it. Then after we tell them, they feel like we’re the ones attacking THEM, when we’re simply telling them what hurt us. People, it’s really not that hard to avoid being a complete Cotton-Headed Ninnymuggins to somebody. Shout out to Will Ferrel.

2. We Expect People To Be Somewhat Honorable

Many times when conflict arises and I know without a shadow of a doubt that I’m not wrong, I decide to just let things sit until an apology presents itself from the other party. Yeah, about 95 percent of the time that doesn’t happen. Our problem is we expect people to have at least a single shred of dignity and simply say two words that would make things better. Guys, being sensitive goes both ways. We get hurt, but all we need is a freaking apology and we’re better. We don’t need gifts and dinners and vases full of flowers.

And I also want to say that the ball isn’t always in our court. We need to express to the other party that something is wrong. That’s our duty to others.

3. Things End Up Blown Way Out Of Proportion

Because of our sensitivity, and because of the other party’s hard-headedness, things get blown way out of proportion. Things escalate because two simple words couldn’t be said. One person couldn’t humble themselves and say a simple apology.

4. We Can’t Fix It

In case anyone was wondering, we can’t fix this. For the most part, we’re very thoughtful individuals who expect much of ourselves and not much from others. But when somebody pushes our buttons, and we have a few, something must happen. It’s nothing that we can fix. We can try to improve at communicating that we’re hurt instead of internalizing it, but that’s it. We are who we are.

5. People Get Fed Up With Us Easily

It gets to the point with certain people where it’s like the boy who cried wolf syndrome. They get really annoyed that things keep going wrong, even when they should know by now what makes us tick. At one point you have to start wondering whether a relationship between the two of you is even healthy. Not all people are meant to get into a relationship with or be friends with somebody who is sensitive.

6. We’re Left Hurting Extremely Badly

When we do call people out on something, often times they just don’t apologize. Sometimes they even try to make it worse. This is the hardest part of it all because somebody we like or love is deliberately trying to hurt us more. Nothing is worse to a sensitive person than deliberate insensitivity.

7. Most Times We End Up Saying Sorry

Trust me, we hate conflict. We hate conflict as much as we hate getting our feelings hurt. So to bypass conflict we end up saying sorry simply to make things normal again. This isn’t a healthy way to take care of the situation at all.

8. Some Times We’re Serious And Cut People Off

Sometimes we are serious and end up cutting people off for good. And no, it wasn’t all just because of a dumb little text or a dumb little side comment–it was because the other person didn’t have the humility to simply take two seconds to say sorry. Literally all we want is an apology. When we’re hurt that bad, we remember it.

9. People Simply Don’t Learn

After a few months of knowing someone, you kind of understand what makes them tick and what doesn’t make them tick. For those who are friends with sensitive people, you should be able to understand that we have a few land mines embedded in the soil of our personality, but if you simply avoid doing just one or two things, life with us is going to be absolute gravy.

10. We Sound Over-Emotional

I’m sure you got that just from reading this post. The truth is that we’re amazing friends to have. We’ll put in more effort than anyone else and we’ll also be much more thoughtful than anyone else. It goes both ways. You get the insane highs with the lows. And the fact is that you won’t even get the lows that much if you simply stop doing the two or three things that we don’t like!

11. It’s Hard To Find Someone That Gets It

I have a few friends that get it. They understand that sometimes jokes need to be kept to a minimum, and that I have my stressful days every now and then. I hardly fight with these kinds of people. For the most part we have awesome times together with little to no conflict at all, while on the other hand I could have multiple conflicts a day with somebody else.

Again, it all depends on the personality of the people around us, and whether they even care about the sensitivity of other people.

What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

Redditors Hilariously Reimagine Michelle Obama’s Hug With George W. Bush

It was inevitable.

Michelle Obama hugged George W. Bush at the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington on Saturday, and people on the internet immediately went into overdrive.

Redditors used former chief White House photographer David Hume Kennerly’s heartwarming picture of the First Lady embracing her husband’s predecessor to engage in a good old Photoshop battle.

They amusingly reimagined Bush as a sleeping baby and an actual bush ― while presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton also made an appearance.

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

Integrator Alert: Demand Time (and Changes) in the FDA’s Move Limiting Access and Increasing Costs of Dietary Supplements

Removal of many dietary supplements from the market. Increased prices for patients and consumers. Limited access to key nutritional tools for practitioners who have used them safely for decades.

Charges like these against a proposal of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have propelled many Paul Revere rides through the alternative and integrative medicine community. One wonders with blasts against the FDA if it is “wolf” that is being cried.

2016-09-24-1474737510-3070699-FDA213X110.gif

Best assessment: not this time. I received an urgent email from long-time Integrator adviser Michael Levin of Health Business Strategies. Levin’s executive roles over the past 4 decades have included positions with pharma companies, medical device firms, as well as supplements firms. He’s a level headed analyst. He pointed to a perspective of the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

“Collectively the draft FDA Guidance can be viewed as a variety of maneuvers by the FDA to re-characterize as many dietary supplements as possible as [New Dietary Ingredients] and then propose a standard of proof for their safety that few manufacturers would be able to meet; one that Congress and the courts clearly did not intend to be applied to dietary supplements.”

Urge the FDA to add a 120 day extension to the comment period

At issue is Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376: “Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry.” The present comment period ends October 11. Levin urges all organizations with a stake in the industry to make their voices heard.

The first step: request a 120 day extension to allow a regulation of this importance to be thoroughly vetted. A draft letter of request is affixed below.

2016-09-24-1474753206-6563239-CRNJointHeader120611400x105.jpg

CRN wasn’t acting alone. It signed a joint statement with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The group of organizations called for “an overhaul” of the guidance. Best estimates are that compliance will cost the industry $ 2-billion to $ 6-billion a year. These costs that will be passed through to patients and consumers.

Levin is realistic about the challenges the guidance poses for anyone not intimately involved with manufacturing and sourcing processes. He warns that “this highly technical regulatory guidance document is very complex.” One example: if the guidance were adopted, a manufacturing change will trigger new dietary ingredient (NDI) status which, due to routine manufacturing processes, “essentially will put most botanical extracts into NDI territory.” If so, this would add substantially to regulatory burden, and cost.

For these reasons Levin, pictured below, “encourage(s) all practitioner-stakeholders to request a 120 day extension on the comment period (now due on 10/11/16) to allow a careful review.” In his view, “medical doctors, pharmacists, naturopathic doctors and other healthcare practitioners should review this guidance and consider how it may impact their ability to prescribe safe nutritional interventions to help their patients.”

2016-09-24-1474754646-3300244-levinmichael2015.jpg

Levin urges all who are affiliated with professional organizations or institutions linked in any way to supplement use to respond – and also send copies of their letters to US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

If guaranteeing safety is the FDA’s primary concern, attacking the dietary supplement manufacturing is roughly like the IRS seeking to balance the budget by auditing people who make under $ 50,000 a year. With a significant percent of the estimated 251,000 medical deaths a year linked to pharmaceutical use, maybe a better use of the FDA’s team on this project would be to set them to mining in a deeper vein of public harm than to making more expensive the agents people are using instead of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom line: Levin’s call for an extension makes sense. No need for the FDA to rush on this one. Get your request for an extension and comments in!

Re: Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

This is to respectfully request a 120 Day extension for comment period on this draft guidance.

As written, the guidance raises very serious questions about the future availability of safe dietary supplements recommended by healthcare practitioners to help patients maintain and improve their health.

Physicians, doctors and pharmacists use nutrient repletion and targeted nutritional interventions to improve the health status of the patients we serve. In so doing, our patients can live healthier lives. Evidence also exists that these nutritional interventions may reduce healthcare costs, safely.

Since this guidance is highly technical and appears to have a high likelihood of impacting the practice of nutritional medicine, we simply need more time to study, understand and consider how this guidance might impact our ability to help the patients we serve. The issues of manufacturing changes, ODIs vs NDIs, the position on synthetic botanicals, the cost of redundancy of NDINs and how that might impact innovation, product availability, consumer prices and ingredient availability are some of the issues that need careful exploration. Products on formularies will need to be reviewed to determine how this guidance, if adopted, would impact their availability.

Please extend the comment period by (at least) 120 days (to February 11, 2017) so that we may evaluate the impact this important guidance may have on public health and safety, in general, and the patients we serve, in particular.

Thank you.

Sincerely
